
A political pressure group, Egbe Alatunto(The Reformers) has challenged electorate to pressurize political office holders to deliver on their electoral promises.
This was declared at a One-Day Seminar titled: Change :Role of Political Office Holders and the electorate” held in Lagos on Monday.
The Convener of the group, Mr Niyi Akinsiju who harped on the need for the participatory democracy stressed that the electorate should constantly assess the performance of their representatives in Government.
He disclosed that the Group had been championing due process within the All Progressives Congress, APC in Mushin Local Government area of Lagos State for the third year running.
” We, the Reformers are committed to entrenching good governance in Mushin and by extension Lagos State.
” The Group had held severally seminar to raise the consciousness of the people to their rights under the current political arrangement and will not relent until sanity is returned in the Local Government and the State at large”, Akinsiju said.
A rights Activist, Comrade Japhet Odesanya, who was the lead speaker at the seminar decried the wrong expectations the electorate have from the elected officials.
Odesanya cautioned political party members to seeking all manner of financial assistance from the elected officials and allowed them to focus on delivering good governance.
He said, ” We need to put credible leaders in power to get to the promised land. We should stop thronging politicians for pecuniary gains”.
Gbenga Fakoya, a representative of New Lagos Movement, NLM, a group that championed entrenchment internal democracy in APC in Lagos charged electorate to be up to their responsibility by monitoring activities of elected officials.
“ There must be pressure on the system to create opportunities to the people. There must be synergy between leaders and followers”, Fakoya noted.
