The Labour Party has urged Nigerians to support its candidates in the 2027 general elections, citing Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s re-election as an example of how voters can use the ballot to advance social democracy.
The party said Lula’s victory demonstrated the confidence voters could place in a political party whose ideology prioritised social justice, economic inclusion and the welfare of the people.
In a statement issued on Friday, National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Ken Asogwa, congratulated Lula on his re-election for a fourth presidential term, describing his victory as an endorsement of his leadership and the ideological principles of his Workers’ Party.
Lula secured 51.79 per cent of valid votes in Brazil’s October 25 presidential run-off, defeating his right-wing challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, who polled 48.21 per cent. His victory secured him an unprecedented fourth, non-consecutive term as president.
Asogwa said the Labour Party and Brazil’s Workers’ Party shared ideological similarities, particularly their commitment to social democracy.
He said, “Our shared beliefs and political philosophy, firmly rooted in social democracy, have continued to bring our paths together in many respects.
“His victory aptly demonstrates the confidence reposed in his leadership and political party by the Brazilian people, who have once again given a mandate to a government whose ideological foundation is firmly rooted in social democracy.
“As Nigeria prepares for the coming general elections, the Labour Party wishes to use this opportunity to encourage Nigerians to draw inspiration from the Brazilian experience by supporting Labour Party candidates across all elective positions.”
The LP spokesman urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from Brazil’s electoral experience by voting for Labour Party candidates across all elective positions in the next general elections.
He cited the administration of Abia State Governor Alex Otti as evidence of the party’s capacity to provide leadership and respond to the needs of Nigerians.
“Through the transformational leadership being provided in Abia State under Governor Alex Otti, the Labour Party has demonstrated its capacity, commitment and understanding of the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people,” Asogwa said.
The spokesman argued that the party’s social democratic philosophy offered Nigeria an alternative approach to governance, with emphasis on the welfare of citizens, social justice, economic inclusion and equitable development.
He said, “Our political heritage, firmly rooted in social democracy, offers Nigeria an opportunity to pursue a governance philosophy that prioritises the welfare of the people, social justice, economic inclusion and equitable development.
“We firmly believe that Nigeria stands to gain immensely from having the Labour Party provide leadership across all tiers of government, including the presidency,” he added.
Asogwa urged Nigerians to remain confident in the party and its vision as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said Brazil’s experience showed that citizens could influence the direction of their country through the ballot, expressing optimism that Nigerian voters could achieve a similar outcome.
“The Brazilian experience has demonstrated the power of the people to shape their political destiny through the ballot. The same is possible in Nigeria, because People Power is greater than political power,” he stated.
