The hopes of workers of The Nation Newspapers who were sent on 3-month compulsory leave in May earning 20 percent of their salaries were dashed on Monday as the leading newspapers handed them sack letters.
COMPLETE NEWS reliable gathered that not less than 100 workers across various departments were laid off in Lagos and outside stations. A senior management staff who spoke on condition of anonymity told COMPLETE NEWS that the decision became inevitable as the novel COVID-19 pandemic eroded revenue of the company.
Meanwhile, other workers especially mid –level and senior staff got their salaries slashed by 25 and 50 percent respectively. However, sources confided in this newspaper that pay cuts will be restored as things gradually normalize.
Workers who survived the mass sack are however still apprehensive as there are speculations that more heads will roll in what an insider source called, ‘second batch list’. It was gathered that the management was still exploring more avenues of reducing cost and returning to path of profitability.
A concerned staff at The Nation queried why the Management will further sack more staff when, ‘adverts have surged remarkably and the newspapers pagination has reduced’.
