The founder of International Central Gospel Church, Dr Mensa Otabil has declared that many church members think pastors collect tithes and offerings and just spend the money on themselves and family saying it was not so.
Otabil said this in Lagos recently during the Word Explosion conference of the Fountain of Life Church.
He said, “I know how church think. Many of you think that we pastors collect tithe and chop the money. It does not happen that way. If you asked what you money is being spent on, I can tell you that beautiful auditorium you are in, the sound system and other logistics are gulping your tithes and offerings”.
The popular pastor who was teaching on the principle of tithing cautioned Christians who were against payment of tithes because of lifestyle of some pastors to perish the thoughts. According to him, the shortcoming of the certain pastors does not nullify the principle and instructions handed down by God.
He added that worshippers who don’t trust their pastor on how they spend church revenues should move to churches of pastors they trust rather than opposing tithing.
Otabil who is the chancellor of Central University College, Ghana explained further that it was not the business of worshippers to dictate how their tithes should be spent nor can they discretionary administer their tithes to the needy or for other philanthropic acts.
“Just as you cannot say because you fixed a bad road leading to your house, you would not pay taxes to government whose responsibility is it to fix collapsed roads., the same thing is applicable to your tithe, you are not expected to use your tithe as you deem fit even if you give it to the poor.
“ In the same manner that a student cant he would not pay his school fees because he helped the school to fix a faulty infrastructure, Christians cannot decide the usage of the tithes. It belongs to God and it must be laid at the feet of the Apostles, Otabil told the conference attendees who listened with rapt attention.
