The Delta State Police Command has arrested three suspected drug traffickers and recovered large quantities of hard drugs in separate intelligence-led operations across the state.
The Command disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, noting that the arrests formed part of sustained efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks across the state.
In one of the operations on June 3, 2026, operatives of the Special Enquiry Unit on stop-and-search duty intercepted a Mercedes truck with registration number KRV 837 ZN at the First Niger Bridge Head, inward Asaba.
The vehicle was driven by one Obinna Nwosu, 47, from Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, who reportedly claimed he was transporting plumbing materials.
However, a search of the vehicle uncovered a large consignment of controlled substances concealed in the truck.
According to the Command, “a meticulous search of the vehicle led to the recovery of thirteen thousand (13,000) sachets of 100mg Tramadol, one hundred (100) sachets of 225mg Tramadol, one hundred (100) sachets of Swinol, three hundred (300) sachets of Rohypnol, sixty (60) sachets of Codeine Phosphate tablets, and one hundred (100) tablets of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), popularly known as ‘Molly’.”
The suspect is currently in custody, while investigations are ongoing to uncover other members of the trafficking network.
The Command added that, “the suspect has been taken into custody and investigations aimed at identifying other persons connected to the illicit consignment are ongoing.”
In a separate operation on the same day, operatives of the Command Anti-Vice Squad (CAVS), acting on credible intelligence, raided a suspected drug distribution centre at Alegbo Community, Owa-Alero, in Ika North East Local Government Area.
Two suspects, Henry Edward and Okwudili Kingsley, were arrested during the operation.
Preliminary investigation suggested the suspects were operating a local drug distribution network.
The police said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were allegedly operating a drug distribution network within the area.”
Recovered from them were five gallons of fermented cannabis mixture, popularly known as “Monkey Tail”, alongside other suspected illicit substances.
The Command stated that, “the suspects and exhibits are in police custody while further investigations are ongoing.”
Reacting to the development, Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the operatives for their professionalism and effectiveness in the operations.
He said, “the command’s resolve to sustain aggressive operations against drug trafficking and other organised crimes” remains unchanged.
The Commissioner further warned that illicit drugs continue to be a major enabler of insecurity.
He noted that “illicit drugs remain a major enabler of cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent offences,” urging residents to support security agencies with timely information.
The Command also appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant, stressing that community cooperation remains critical in dismantling criminal networks.
