The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu has called on the Muslim faithful to emulate the virtues of total obedience and selflessness service as demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim.
Ikweremadu made the call in a Sallah message to the Muslim Umah on the occasion of this year’s Eid-al-Kabir.
The lawmaker observed that Nigeria’s major challenge was not lack of virtuous religious injunctions, state laws and regulations, but willful disobedience and poor attitude to the rule of law as a key democratic principle.
He said: “Eid-al-Kabir, which is a celebration of sense of sacrifice and obedience is an opportunity to reflect on our attitudes to religious injunctions such as obedience, service, peace, selflessness, love, unity, and also our attitude to the rule of law. No nation makes the desired progress unless citizens live by the laws and regulations set for the orderly conduct and progress of the society, irrespective of their social status.”
The Deputy President of the Senate also enjoined the Muslim Umah to pray for political tranquility ahead of 2015, stressing the need for focus on service and mandate delivery among the political elites.
“The apparent preoccupation with the politics of 2015 at the expense of service is a sad commentary on our democracy and an apparent disregard for the teachings of our religious faiths which stipulate that power comes from God alone”, he added.
