More than 300 schools have registered for the forthcoming Lagos State Secondary Schools Sports Festival, also known as the “Ibile Games’’.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that festival will take place from Jan. 25 to Feb. 5.
Some of the sports which will feature in the festival are athletics, chess, gymnastics, scrabble, swimming, weightlifting, boxing and judo.
Others are karate, volleyball, taekwondo, wrestling, badminton, table tennis, tennis and squash.
Taiwo Kool, a member of Lagos State Volleyball Association, said the mini sports festival will be used to kick-start sporting activities in the state in 2015.
“All we have been doing so far is to make enough preparations for the upcoming games.
“The mini school sports festival is coming earlier than usual, which is a good thing because schools are just resuming for the second term academic session.
“The state government has provided logistics, among other things, towards ensuring a successful competition,” Kool said.
He, however, said the festival would be used to discover athletes who would represent the state in future national and international competitions.
Kool said seminars and workshops had been organised for referees and other technical officials towards ensuring good officiating.
“We have met and had practical sessions, which are all aimed at improving the standard of officiating in various sports.
“I hope we will have a memorable tournament like last year’s edition, and more talented children will be discovered,” he said.
