In what could be described as unprecedented move, the House of Representatives, this week, passed 131 bills through first reading.
In a statement issued by Rinsola Abiola a Special Assistant on New Media to Speaker Yakubu Dogara described the feat as remarkable adding that was t”he first time such a feat will be achieved by any assembly since the nation’s return to democracy 16 years ago”
Abiola added that the bills were part of the outdated laws and statutes which the 8th Assembly under the leadership of Rt Hon Yakubu Dogara promised to update before the end of next year.
“While referring the bills to the Rules and Business Committee for scheduling for second reading, the Speaker asked the chairman to ensure that at least 20 of them are listed for consideration in the coming week”, the statement adds.
It will be recalled that the special committee commissioned by the House to review outdated laws and statues recently paid the Speaker a courtesy call and submitted its work, which has now been made into bills for passage by the National Assembly.
