The Chinese PC maker, Lenovo Group has indicated interest in the lucrative smartphone segment as the global demands for Personal Computers, PCs decline. The world’s No 2 PC maker in the world after HP was reported to have reached an advanced stage of discussions with a Japanese partner, NEC Corp over the new venture. NEC Corp’s mobile business has been faltering over the years.
Lenovo, which is nearly neck-and-neck with Hewlett-Packard Co as the top global PC maker, has spent billions of dollars over the past few years to strengthen its personal computer business. This led to the purchase of Brazilian electronics maker CCE last year, Germany’s Medion in 2011 and IBM’s PC business in 2005.
To boost the company’s dwindle revenues, the firm has decided to invest in more profitable smartphones, tablets and enterprise computing segments.
Meanwhile, observers in the mobile segment foresee a bumpy journey for Lenovo considering the current competition in designs, innovation and marketing in the smartphone segment.
Last week, Samsung Mobile hinted on its plan to launch the slimmer version of its flagship smartphone, Galaxy S4 which will be known as S4 Mini.
Galaxy S4 which sold over 10 million within first month of launch was adjudged No 1 smartphone in the world by Consumer Report, an independent body that surveys products.
Other tech giants that maintain sizeable portions of the market shares in the high end segment of smartphone include Apple, Blackberry and others.
Also Nokia’s grip on the low end smart phone segment is mind blowing. Its low end ASHA series have been enjoying huge tractions in the emerging market including Nigeria in the last few years.
