A member of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Mohammed, representing Birnin Kebbi, Kalgo, and Bunza Federal Constituency of Kebbi State, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, citing protracted leadership crises and internal divisions within the opposition party.
Announcing his decision in a statement on Tuesday, the lawmaker said the PDP has been “deeply enmeshed in unresolved leadership tussles and litigations” that have weakened its effectiveness as a political platform.
“The persistent leadership crisis and internal conflicts within the party have made it increasingly difficult for committed members like myself to contribute meaningfully to its growth and democratic responsibilities,” he said.
Mohammed added that his defection followed extensive consultations with constituents and political associates across his constituency.
“After wide consultations with my constituents and key stakeholders, I have resolved to join the All Progressives Congress in the best interest of my people and to enhance my capacity to deliver effective representation,” he stated.
The lawmaker confirmed that he has formally communicated his resignation to his ward leadership in Nasarawa I Ward, Birnin Kebbi, and has also notified the Speaker of the House of Representatives of his defection.
Mohammed’s defection comes amid a wave of high-profile exits from the PDP in Kebbi State and beyond, underscoring deepening cracks within the party at both state and national levels.
In recent days, the PDP in Kebbi has been hit by internal upheavals, including the resignation of its State Secretary, Abubakar Bawa Kalgo, further fueling concerns about cohesion and direction within the party.
Political observers say the growing instability—marked by factional disputes and court cases over party leadership—has continued to erode confidence among elected officials, many of whom are now seeking political refuge in the ruling APC.
The APC, on the other hand, has been consolidating its influence in Kebbi State, with Mohammed’s defection expected to strengthen its numerical advantage in the National Assembly.
With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, analysts believe more defections could follow if the PDP fails to resolve its internal crises and present a united front.
