In what appears as a clear statement of lead in innovation and designs in the lucrative high end smartphone segment, Samsung announced its plan to launch the slimmed-down version of its fast selling iconic phone, Galaxy S4 called S4 mini.
According to the Korean phone maker, the device will be officially announced June 20 at an event in London.
Galaxy S4 which was recently rated as number one high-end smartphone in the world by Consumer Report, a renowned rating organization sold over 10 million units in less than a month.
Mobile enthusiasts and observers opine that this new debut of slimmer gadget was subtly signals to Samsung’s arch-rival, Apple about its relevance in the scheme of things in the hyper competitive smartphone segment.
J.K Shin, Chief Executive Officer and President Samsung Mobile division reportedly said in a blog post that the company is fast adapting to the needs of sophisticated consumers of high-end devices which necessitated the debut of a slimmer version of Galaxy S4.
“We want to give people more choices with Galaxy S4 mini, similar look and feel of Galaxy S4 for more compact and practical uses,” says Shin.
The Galaxy S4 mini will come with a 4.3-inch display screen, comparable to the iPhone 5’s 4-inch screen, and weigh 3.77 ounces.
The new phone will also feature an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera (down from the S4’s 13 megapixels) and 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The device is also has 8GB of internal memory, with a capacity to accept up to 64GB external memory.
A sleek 9mm wide (.35 inches), a hair wider than the iPhone 5’s 7.6mm (.3 inches) runs on the latest version of Google’s Android operating system, Jelly Bean, with a 1.7 Ghz dual-core processor.
The device will come in either white or black. No price or release date was announced.
