The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara, has called on government at all levels and stakeholders in the Nigerian project to put hands on deck achieve the vision of a better Nigeria.
A press statement issued by his spokesman, Mr Turaki Hassan, said the Speaker made this statement when he received a delegation from Rotary International, District 9125, led by its governor, Dr Mike Omotosho.
Dogara stated, “We must envision where we are going to because it is said that without vision, people perish. You need to know your destination so that you can now work out the roads that will lead to it.”
He therefore called on leaders to be good models for the younger generation to emulate, noting that, “Without a model, it is very difficult for individuals to have something that they can aspire to. We have had wrong models in the past; we are happy that this time around, we can look up to certain individuals in government and politics and say truly, I desire to be like this person, and I guess that is one big thing that this commonsense in Nigerian politics has brought to bear in Nigeria today. Leaders are now committed to change, and have gone from talking about fighting corruption to doing everything within their powers to live a corruption-free lifestyle, and doing everything possible to put an end to corruption.”
While commending the activities of the Rotarians, especially for their role in routing polio from Nigeria and other countries, he pointed out that service is at the heart of leadership, and called on them to join in alleviating the sufferings of people displaced by Boko Haram attacks.
He added, “I sincerely believe that it is because you have served, offering your talents and resources and placing it at the disposal of people, the less privileged, communities that are ravaged by diseases and others, that your organisation, Rotary International, is one of the leading organisations in the world.”
Dogara also assured them of the support of the House in their projects, but advised them to reach out to the Senate to also key into the programmes.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and governor of Rotary International District 9125, Dr. Mike Omotosho, stated that the delegation had visited with the aim of inviting the Speaker to the end of the year district conference, then invited him to be a part of their ongoing special projects. He also informed the Speaker of the steps being taken by the organization to eradicate polio, and spoke on other efforts geared towards empowering IDP’s, including getting displaced children back to school.
