Renowned Nigeria’s Civil Society Organization, CLEEN Foundation has excited Nigerians with its ‘www.StopThe Bribe.net’ platform, a website that enables Nigerians to report corruption cases to a special office of the Nigeria Police Force.
The foundation at the weekend in Lagos assembled artisans, commercial transporters and journalists for a workshop on how the platform operates.
Nengale Daniel , the Program Manager of CLEEN Foundation while speaking on the initiative disclosed that dozens of potential corruption cases had been stalled while some officers that erred were appropriately sanctioned.
He said, “Reports had been made from Lagos on certain infractions to the platform and immediately the IPO (Investigating Police Officers)were called to verify complaints. Where infractions were established, sanctions were given appropriately. We have received reports that have been successfully handled.
The Nigerian Police Force knows that people are watching. Reports are pouring in across the country. The Force Headquarters in Abuja are aware where the complaints are coming from and they are able to give responses to them.
“Most of the complaints centrered around illegal arrests, an attempt to obtain bribe and so on. Now, with the advent of ‘Stop the Bride platform’ , many bribe takers are now often careful about bribe because they know victims can report to higher authorities and actions will be taken”.
“I see an end to the system of corruption in Nigeria with this platform. We are getting into a phase where corrupt officials and bribe takers will not have ways of hiding from the citizens. If we keep up the momentum and be vigilant, it is going to public officers to sustain a corrupt lifestyle.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Toye Jolaoye who represented the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase said contrary to the negative notion most Nigerians have about the police, ‘there had been a shift and progressive change in the Nigerian Police. From recruiting to the daily administration, the Force has tremendously changed”.
Jolaye urged Nigerian to made use of the platform to inform of infractions of Police officer assuring that prompt sanctions will be meted out to erred officers.
On protection of identity of complaint, the Abuja based Police officer explained that had been taken care of on the platform.
Earlier, Gabriel Akinremi, Chief ICT officer of CLEEN had educated the participants on how the platform operates. He said the website was built using Ushahidi Platform which enabled easy collation of information through various social and communication media like SMS, Email, Twitter, Facebook and web-forms’.
