
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has allayed fears expressed over the card readers that the commission will deploy for the 2015 General elections.
Jega, who was a special guest on a breakfast show, Sunrise Daily on ChannelsTV this morning insisted that the device will address anomalies experienced in previous elections. He said those crying wolf over the device were those whose rigging plots might have hit the rocks as the card reader machine will practically prevent rigging.
According to him, there hullaballoo trailing the machine was called for as other neighboring countries have used the device with negligible hitches recorded.
On those buying and stockpiling Permanent Voter Cards, the INEC boss declared they were only wasting their time as the card reader machine will reveal the real owner of the card.
He however noted that hitches envisaged will be mitigated by Incidence form. According to him, poll officials will the form for bonafide voter whose card could not be read for technical or any other reasons
Meanwhile, the United States has urged INEC not to succumb to pressure and continue with plans to use the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) and the Smart Card Readers for the polls.
The US government through its vice president, Joe Biden, spoke with President Goodluck Jonathan, the incumbent and Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate as well as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari on the forthcoming presidential election.
In a statement issued by the US Embassy on Thursday, Biden commended President Jonathan and General Buhari for signing the Abuja Accord in mid-January as a show of their commitment to non-violence throughout the election process.
“The Vice President further expressed the United States’ support for the Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission and its work to deliver free, fair, and credible elections, in part through its essential efforts to distribute Permanent Voter Cards and help ensure that electronic voter card readers are in place and fully operational.”
Biden also noted his concern about the violence during some recent election-related events and re-emphasised the need for both presidential candidates to make clear that such violence has no place in democratic elections.
The US vice president stated further that the American government would stand with the Nigerian people in support of credible and peaceful elections, and would continue to stand with the Nigerian people whatever the outcome of the presidential poll.
The introduction of the PVC and the card reader for use in the general election has been a subject of hot debate and several litigation in Nigeria.
