The Ogun State Police Command has presented cheques totalling N37.9m to the families and next-of-kin of deceased police officers who served under the command.
The command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying the financial assistance was provided under the Nigeria Police Force Group Life Assurance Scheme.
The presentation was held at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, and was made on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, by the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni.
The cheques, according to Babaseyi, amounted to N37,913,081.77 and were presented to the beneficiaries of officers who died in the course of their service to the nation.
“The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, psc, FCSS, MNIPR, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has presented cheques totalling Thirty-Seven Million, Nine Hundred and Thirteen Thousand, Eighty-One Naira, Seventy-Seven Kobo (₦37,913,081.77) to the families and next-of-kin of deceased Police officers who served under the Command.”
The event, which was held to provide financial support to the affected families, also featured a one-minute silence in honour of the deceased officers.
Babaseyi said the presentation was conducted under the Group Life Assurance Scheme, which was established to support the families of police officers who lost their lives while serving the country.
“The presentation, held today at the Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, was made under the Nigeria Police Force Group Life Assurance Scheme, designed to provide financial support to families of officers who lost their lives in the course of service to the nation.”
Representing the Commissioner of Police at the event was the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Oliver Ezirim, alongside members of the Command Management Team.
According to the statement, Ezirim reaffirmed the Inspector-General’s commitment to the welfare of police personnel and their families, while acknowledging the sacrifices made by officers who died in service.
“DCP Ezirim reaffirmed the IGP’s commitment to Police welfare, noting that while no financial assistance can replace the lives lost, the intervention reflects the Force’s appreciation of their sacrifices and its responsibility towards the families left behind.”
The beneficiaries also expressed appreciation for the intervention, with one of them, Mrs John Shito, speaking on behalf of the families.
“Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs John Shito expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police and the Ogun State Command for the welfare support, assuring that the funds would be judiciously utilised for the welfare and sustenance of their families.”
The command said the financial assistance was part of its continued responsibility towards the families of officers who died in the line of duty.
