Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has blamed negligence by authorities for Tuesday’s derailment of an Abuja-Kaduna passenger train.
Sani, in a post via his X handle on Tuesday, said passengers have consistently raised concerns about security and safety on the corridor, adding that commuters had long complained about the condition of the tracks but were ignored.
“The Abuja-Kaduna train that derailed today is a direct result of negligence by the authorities concerned. For months, passengers have repeatedly complained about their experience on the track, but were ignored.
“The expansive bush between Kaduna and Abuja is not a place to be treated lightly,” he wrote.
Our correspondent reports that the passenger train derailed shortly after leaving Abuja around 11 a.m., leaving several carriages overturned and triggering panic among those on board.
The chaotic scene forced passengers to scramble to safety amid confusion and fear.
While the exact cause of the derailment has yet to be confirmed, military personnel were deployed to assist with the evacuation of stranded commuters.
However, no official report on injuries or casualties had been released as of press time, while authorities are still expected to make a formal statement on the incident
