MTN Nigeria, Globacom and two other GSM operators have intensified SIM registration campaign urging subscribers that have not yet registered to comply to beat tomorrow’s cut-off date of unregistered phone lines as the regulator insists on the deadline.
The GSM operators in recent times had been bombarding their subscribers with text messages asking them to confirm their registration status by sending reg to dedicated codes. A leading operator even promised unregistered subscribers free airtime credit if they turn up at registration centers.
The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC the nation’s regulatory body for telecommunication sector had vowed to prove those doubting the commission’s resolve to stick to the deadline wrong.
Eugene Juwah Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission recently in Lagos had urged the media to educate the public of the importance of the scheme insisting that the body will not bow to pressure on the matter.
“We wish to mention this because of the importance we attach to this programme (SIM registration)and for media to realize the importance of sensitizing Nigerians of the essence of registration programme and the upcoming disconnection of all unregistered SIMs in Nigeria by June 30, 2013” Juwah insists.
