In solidarity with over 200 abducted school girls of the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno, State, most state governments have planned to celebrate this year Children’s Day celebration in low key.
The children was usually filled with fanfare with colourful parades by school children.
Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano, who is one of the many governors who have planned low-key celebration issued a directive in statement signed by the state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Tony Onyima in Awka that the celebration should be modest.
“This is a mark of solidarity with the over 200 female students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno, abducted by the Boko Haram Sect last month”, the statement read.
The governor said that the traditional match-past by school children, had been shelved.
He enjoined heads of primary and secondary schools to instead, hold special prayer sessions in their schools for the release of the girls.
He further enjoined all churches in the state to conduct special prayers for the immediate release of the kidnapped school girls, and for an end to terrorism in the country.
May 27 is set aside by the United Nations to remember and celebrate children across the world.
It is also a day to reflect on the importance of children as leaders of tomorrow and what the future has in stock for them.
