Youth Empowerment and ICT Foundation, an initiative of Jim Ovia Foundation recently in Lagos donated over 500 computers to not fewer than 300 schools in Nigeria and over 150 laptops with one year free internet access to students. Also, more than 1000 Blackberry and Android smartphones were given to students that pre-registered online for the event.
The Chairman of the foundation, Jim Ovia who spoke at this year edition of the event titled: “Social Media Awareness: The good, The Bad and the opportunities” urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the ‘empowerment tools’ given them adding that they belong to a privileged generation since they never benefited such during their time.
The Visafone boss further noted that he is an unrepentant believer in the capacity of ICT as a tool of empowerment adding that the foundation will always engage ICT to drive empowerment in the country.
He also hinted on his investment in education by the establishment of James Hope College, Agbor, Delta his country home that will offer what he described as ‘affordable excellence ’. The school that is presently cited on the same premises of Jim’s primary school, Pilgrim Baptist Primary School, Agbor “is expected to give opportunity to Agbor and its environs residents world –class subsidized fee education because of the substantial endowment fund”, he added.
“I am extremely honored to invite students to enjoy the benefits of an education in such a serene environment as Agbor. I was fortunate enough to attend Pilgrim Baptist Primary School in Agbor, which was located at the current James Hope College site. The education I undertook set the foundation for a belief in life-long learning which has been the keystone to some of my achievements as a businessman, a family-man and now an educationist”, Jim says.
The school’s principal, Malcolm Philips was also at the event.
